Just one hour from Bloomington, Indiana and approximately one hour from Louisville, Kentucky, is the beautiful town of French Lick, Indiana. Historically known for their mineral springs, luxurious hotels and spas, the town is currently home to a budding artist's community.

Touching Ground Gallery, located at 469 South Maple Street is a newly renovated space in the formally- known, historic, Five and Dime Store, in the heart of downtown French Lick. The new art gallery features the art of Chicago artists, Cyd Smillie, Susan Barton, and Nella Spencer, along with featured guest artist's from Europe and Indiana. Opening in mid-June, 2010, the gallery will sell a wide range of original, contemporary oil paintings, watercolors, ceramics and first edition art books.

Echoing lines of dried and plowed agricultural fields of a past harvests, Susan Barton's, The American Dream, encapsulates the significance of America's immigrant and agricultural past, while resonating current stuggles of new immigrants to the United States.

Intending to explore her own great grandparents immigrant past, the textile becomes a visual narrative; one of any typical German family who immigrated from an impoverished, over populated Prussian state near the turn of the century, to their intended land of promise and hope-America. Like many, finding back breaking work in the nation's fields became the only starting point for a new immigrant to the United States. Corroded barbed wire reflects the past they left and injustices they would face in this new world: from past conscripted military duty and hardships of trying to earn a living in Germany, to new hard manual labor and growing resentments towards increased European immigrants within the United States. A rough edged and unfinished steel frame encompasses the textile, contrasting the once heavily agricultural opportunities of the country giving way to the emerging promise of larger urban cities and the beginnings of the industrial revolution.

This exhibition will feature the work of 50 artists designing plates in Delft Blue. The expression, "Blue Plate Special", first made its way into the American vocabulary on October 22nd, or 1892 through the Fred Harvey Restaurants. A web collection of 1930's prose gives this definition: "A Blue Plate Special is a low priced daily special: a main course with all the fixins, a daily combo, a square for two bits". The Blue Plate Special was very popular in the Depression Era, but still exists today.

The exhibit features the work of 50 artists reinterpreting this American Symbol of past economic times. Some of the artists featured are: Tim Anderson, Paul Sierra, Sam Rosby, Marya Veeck, Cyd Smillie, Peter Hurley, Susan Barton and many more.

August House Studio opened its door in 1987. It has focused on being a neighborhood gallery. The gallery is a comfortable, intimate space that lends itself to both large and small shows. Located in the heart of Roscoe Village, August House Studio brings the Blue Plate Special Exhibition as its 22nd annual Holiday celebration.

Acclaimed International Artists to Exhibit Works Depicting the Struggle to Triumph Over Political, Social, Physical and Emotional Barriers

CHICAGO, August 30, 2008 -- Facing Walls, a unique exhibition exploring both the physical and psychological effects of barriers presented in society, will open with a gala public reception on Friday, October 3rd, from 6pm to 9pm in the Scharpenberg Gallery on the 4th floor of the historic Dank-Haus Chicago.

Facing Walls will showcase more than 80 works of art by international, European Union artists as well as local artists from Chicago. These artists challenge the issues associated with political barriers through painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and metalwork. The exhibiting artists include Susan Barton, Cyd Smillie, Ed Ott, Lothar Speer, Sally Swingewood, Ronald Graziano, Laura Keeble, Lorna Filippini-Mulliken, Justin D. Miller, Adaesi Ukairo and Carol and David Koeller.

The public is invited to an opening cocktail reception for the exhibition and an opportunity to meet the artists and purchase their work on Friday, October 3rd, from 6pm to 9pm in the Scharpenberg Gallery on the 4th floor of the historic Dank-Haus. The Dank-Haus, is located in the Lincoln Square neighborhood at 4740 N. Western Avenue, one block south of Lawrence and one block north of the Western Avenue Brown Line L station.

In addition to the opening reception on October 3rd, Facing Walls will be open as part of Art Walk Ravenswood on Saturday, October 4th and Sunday, October 5th from 11am to 6pm. Yes. The ghost of the Red Lion Pub still walks, pounds on doors and passes judgment on art!

"Painting Shakespeare's Words", an art exhibition in August of 2006 proved to be a challenging night for all art goers and artists! Many ghostly occurrences happened that steamy summer night from poundings being emitted on the second floor ladies bathroom, pendulum-like swinging of a glass art installation, to Laura Keeble's original Shakespeare painting flying off the wall!

Susan Barton, Laura Keeble, Sally Swingewood, Michelle Izzard, Elaine Jones, Amanda C. Cox and Terry Johm Waites, all presented art depicting Shakespeare's words during the "other world" manifestations.

DANK-HAUS, German Cultural Center, presents a premier exhibition, 'Germans in Mind; A Celebration of German Thought Through Art', October 13th-November 17th in both the Scharpenberg and Rough Space Galleries. Featuring the work of 23 international and local artists, the exhibition focuses on unique and original visual perspectives inspired by prominent German philosophical themes, prose and iconic figures. Chicago artist and curator, Susan Barton, introduces emerging artists who artistically incite visual dialogue to classic German themes through their work.
